Coffee and Conversations: The Rising Tide with Sean Norman

April 22, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free, donations welcomed.
On Earth Day, Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. Coffee and Conversations brings archaeologist Sean Norman, from GARI, the Gulf Archaeological Research Institute, to Inverness. An expert on the coastal archaeology of our area, Mr. Norman’s program “The Rising Tide” discusses the effects of climate change and sea level rise on our historical and cultural resources.
Dealing with climate change presents one of the greatest challenges to modern society. This is in part due to the complex systems that influence climatic shifts. Additionally, the impacts of climate change vary greatly from droughts in one region to torrential rains and flooding in another. Sea level, however, represents an ideal proxy for climate as fluctuations often mirror climatic shifts and the impacts are more apparent from both local and global perspectives. This presentation will discuss the interface of climate change, sea level, and humans through the lens of archaeology. Examples from Florida’s Gulf coast will highlight how climate change and sea level have impacted prehistoric coastal people in the past and how they shape our lives today.
This program is free and open to the public. There is limited in-person seating, with masks and social distancing at the museum, as well as a live stream and recording of the event. Sign up at www.cccourthouse.org or call 352-341-6428.
