“The School” : The Story of George Washington Carver and Black Education in Citrus County
In the South, during the time of Jim Crow laws and “separate but equal” segregation, black communities were often left with little to no resources for education from state and local agencies. These systemic inequalities in funding and resources meant that black communities often had to rally together to provide a quality education for their children. Explore this interactive digital exhibit to hear stories of struggle, perseverance, and resolve from the Black community of Citrus County through the stories of the George Washington Carver Elementary School and Booker T. Washington High School, as they made a way out of no way and built a vibrant community before, during, and after segregation.
