SUMMARY:Free Coffee and Conversation: Florida Women\, Advice\, and Social Change

Please RSVP in advance by calling the museum office between Tuesday and Saturday at (352) 341-6428.\n\nNewspaper advice columns started as lovelorn columns during Yellow Journalism as a way of showing that newspapers had a “heart.” These columns typically ran in the women’s section of metropolitan newspapers\, many in Florida\, and included a mixture of content\, from traditional to progressive. Learn how these columns affected Floridian women’s lives and relationships in the 1950s and 1960s in this presentation.\nKimberly Voss\, PhD\, is a professor of journalism at the University of Central Florida. Her research focuses on historical analysis of women journalists’ careers\, women’s political influence\, and the definition of women’s news in the post-World War II years; many of them from Florida. She has published five books\, including Re-Evaluating Women’s Page Journalism in the Post-World War II Era and Women Politicking Politely. She has published over fifty journal articles about women journalists.\n\nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humani-ties and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture\, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Free Coffee and Conversation: The Battle of Olustee
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this interesting presentation with speaker Derek Vorobok on the anniversary of The Battle of Olustee. This was the largest battle fought in Florida during the American Civil War.\nComplimentary refreshments will be served. Please RSVP for seating. Call the museum office between Tuesday and Saturday at (352) 341-6428.\n\nIn this battle\, the opposing sides were evenly matched\, but the casualties were disproportionately high\, particularly for the Union forces. The brutal fighting of the battle produced one of the highest ratios of casualties per men engaged of the entire war. The engagement effectively curtailed a major Union offensive\, and subsequent operations shifted elsewhere\, once again making Florida a backwater theater in the war. The presentation will include authentic uniforms and equipment of the American Civil War.\n\nAbout Derek Vorobok:Derek Vorobok has held an avid interest in the American Civil War since an early age. He was a Civil War reenactor for 20 years. He has earned a BA in History and an MA in American Military History. Derek has taught three years of High School U.S. History\, as well as two years of Social Studies in Adult Education. Derek has enjoyed giving presentations on a variety of historical subjects at the Citrus County Library System\, museums\, Dade Battlefield State Park\, and other locations.
