As a state built almost solely on imagination\, it is no surprise that our imaginations have sometimes run wild when it comes to telling Florida stories on film. From the Creature from the Black Lagoon to the Skunk-Ape\, George Romero’s zombies\, and the sharks in the Jaws sequels\, all types of supernatural monsters have set up their homes in Florida. In his entertaining presentation\, Dr. Clark traces the little-known facts of Florida\, including the story of the state flag\, the origin of Florida’s largest grocery store chain\, Coca-Cola billionaires\, and the origin of cars on the beach with over thirty unique and fast-paced stories. This presentation is based on the book Hidden History of Florida by Dr. Jim Clark.\n\nAbout the speakerJim Clark is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Florida where he has taught history since 1987. He earned a doctorate in Florida history from the University of Florida. He is the author of nine books on Florida history and the editor of a three-volume anthology of Florida literature. DESCRIPTION:The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum presents a crafting class for adults to create decorative fly swatters- a perfect summer creation! We’ll be hosting this session on Tuesday\, July 22nd at 10:30 am.\nThis class will be taught by volunteer Cyndy Hamilton with a $5 fee that goes toward supplies. Spaces are limited so please call to RSVP in advance. Classes often fill up and we may not be able to accommodate walk-ins. To sign up\, call (352) 341-6428.\n\nWe encourage folks to park in the parking lot just East of and across the street from The Old Courthouse (between the Old Courthouse and the Sheriff station). Olive Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. She produced and saved many funeral programs that we now have as official records. Due to the practice of segregation. many Black people of that time were not listed in County and State records. Andrea is also President of the Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery\, and the panel will also be talking about the effort to preserve\, maintain\, and create markers at this historic cemetery in Crystal River.
