DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, August 6th\, at 10:30 am\, Citrus County Parks and Recreation and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum present “Clay Pot Crafts: A Class for Adults.” This session is recommended for folks ages 18 and up. In this workshop\, you will sculpt a terra cotta planter! Air dry clay and seeds will be provided. A $5.00 fee will be collected at the door to help us cover our supplies. Spaces are limited\, so please preregister by calling the museum office at (352) 341-6428. Open to the public with complimentary coffee and light refreshments\, but please RSVP in advance for seats at (352) 341-6428.\n\nBeginning in 1565 with the founding of St. Augustine\, Florida has been making history; but\, much of it is hidden. In his entertaining presentation\, Dr. Clark traces the little-known facts of Florida\, including the story of the state flag\, the origin of Florida’s largest grocery store chain\, Coca-Cola billionaires\, and the origin of cars on the beach with over thirty unique and fast-paced stories. This presentation is based on the book Hidden History of Florida by Dr. Jim Clark.\n\nAbout the speakerJim Clark is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Florida where he has taught history since 1987. He earned a doctorate in Florida history from the University of Florida. He is the author of nine books on Florida history and the editor of a three-volume anthology of Florida literature. His articles have appeared in The Miami Herald\, The Orlando Sentinel\, The Washington Post\, and The Florida Historical Quarterly.____________________________________________________\nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. Please RSVP in advance at (352) 341-6428.\n\nCome and learn about Citrus County’s early African American citizens in a conversation with members of the community moderated by Andrea McCray\, Andrea is granddaughter of Mrs. Annie McCray\, who was the Clerk of the Church at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. She produced and saved many funeral programs that we now have as official records. Due to the practice of segregation. many Black people of that time were not listed in County and State records. Andrea is also President of the Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery\, and the panel will also be talking about the effort to preserve\, maintain\, and create markers at this historic cemetery in Crystal River.

In the early years of the American film industry\, Florida was a favorite location for pioneer movie makers\, and David Morton chronicles the state’s importance to producers through the next 125years.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDavid Morton received his Ph.D. in Texts and Technology from the University of Central Florida in 2019\, where he also is an instructor in both History and Media Studies. He was a recipient of the 2016-17 Fulbright scholarship and serves as program director for the Flickering Landscapes Conference Series. His book\, A Motion Picture Paradise!: A History of Florida’s Film and Television Industry was published by the University Press of Florida in July 2024.\n\nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. Please RSVP in advance by calling the museum office between Tuesday and Saturday at (352) 341-6428.\n\nNewspaper advice columns started as lovelorn columns during Yellow Journalism as a way of showing that newspapers had a “heart.” These columns typically ran in the women’s section of metropolitan newspapers\, many in Florida\, and included a mixture of content\, from traditional to progressive. Learn how these columns affected Floridian women’s lives and relationships in the 1950s and 1960s in this presentation.\nKimberly Voss\, PhD\, is a professor of journalism at the University of Central Florida. Her research focuses on historical analysis of women journalists’ careers\, women’s political influence\, and the definition of women’s news in the post-World War II years; many of them from Florida. She has published five books\, including Re-Evaluating Women’s Page Journalism in the Post-World War II Era and Women Politicking Politely. She has published over fifty journal articles about women journalists.\n\nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humani-ties and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum.
