SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: The Amazing History of Aprons
DESCRIPTION:Lunch and Learn brings Marnie Ward and Sue Collins from UF/IFAS Extension to talk on the traditions of aprons.  Sue is a 4-H Club leader and gifted seamstress; and Marnie is the Citrus County 4-H Agent. Both will share aprons from their personal collections and invite you to bring one of your own to share with the group. \nThe earliest aprons were worn with a purpose. They kept clothes clean and were a catchall for errands and tasks throughout the day. Worn by bakers\, cobblers\, blacksmiths\, butchers\, nurses\, waiters and waitresses they were practical\, and task focused. Worn by generations of working folks and woven into the fabric of the family they became something more. Come to learn the rich history of aprons and how we are passing it on to future generations in our community. Sign up for this free program HERE or call 352-341-6428.

SUMMARY:New Exhibit Opening: Tie One On...An Apron of Course!
DESCRIPTION:The apron has been taken for granted by many art and social historians. However\, this fascinating exhibit will reevaluate these unique objects as an important piece of our social history. \nFeaturing 50 vintage and contemporary examples\, this exhibit reviews the apron’s role as an emotionally charged vehicle for expression with a rich and varied craft history that is still relevant today. \nFeaturing aprons dating from the 1900s through present\, the exhibition chronicles changing attitudes toward women and domestic work. It also surveys the wide range of design and craft techniques apron-makers have used to express themselves\, while still working within creative venues traditionally available to women. Elaborately embroidered aprons of delicate cotton\, for example\, were worn by well-heeled women of the 1920s. In contrast\, the Depression and war years of the 1930s and 1940s inspired sturdy\, calico bib aprons. The post-war 1940s and 1950s—the June Cleaver era—stand out as the acknowledged heyday of the apron\, when commercial and intricately hand-decorated aprons flourished as symbols of family and motherhood. \nToday\, artists continue using aprons to explore cultural myths and realities\, as well as their individual experiences with American domesticity. Though not as widespread as they once were\, aprons remain as functional and protective garments for men and women alike.

SUMMARY:Sea Level Rise in Citrus County: An Assessment of Current and Future Impacts\, and Discussion of Possible Responses
DESCRIPTION:With 8\,440  miles of coastline\, Florida is under immense threat from sea level rise and is now poised to begin working with local governments to plan for “resilience”.  What might that mean for a coastal community like Citrus County?  What are the likely consequences of sea level rise\, and how should we respond?  We will look at some of the impacts that are already evident\, predictions of what the future might hol\, and consider some possible strategies for minimizing the long-term environmental and economic impacts on our community. \nGene is a Conservation Biologist with a long history of working to conserve natural Florida.  He worked as the Environmental Lands Planner for the Southwest Florida Water Management District where he helped identify lands to be protected through the Save Our Rivers\, Preservation 2000 and Florida Forever land acquisition programs\, and also played the lead role in writing land management and public use plans for the acquired properties.  After 16 years at SWFWMD\, he spent 5 years serving as the Conservation Planner for the Florida Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.  His work there included conducting a comprehensive assessment of projected climate change impacts in Florida\, including an emphasis on sea level rise.  He then spent several years working as a wildlife biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.  He is currently semi-retired\, but remains actively involved with the Florida Native Plant Society\, where her currently serves on the Board of Directors as Chair of the Policy and Legislation Committee\, with the Adventure Coast Group of the Sierra Club where he serves as Outings Chair\, and with the Citizen’s Climate Lobby.  Investigating the impacts of sea level rise is a continuing interest.

SUMMARY:Coffee and Conversations: The Rising Tide with Sean Norman
DESCRIPTION:On Earth Day\, Thursday\, April 22 at 7 p.m. Coffee and Conversations brings archaeologist Sean Norman\, from GARI\, the Gulf Archaeological Research Institute\, to Inverness. An expert on the coastal archaeology of our area\, Mr. Norman’s program “The Rising Tide” discusses the effects of climate change and sea level rise on our historical and cultural resources.\n\nDealing with climate change presents one of the greatest challenges to modern society. This is in part due to the complex systems that influence climatic shifts. Additionally\, the impacts of climate change vary greatly from droughts in one region to torrential rains and flooding in another. Sea level\, however\, represents an ideal proxy for climate as fluctuations often mirror climatic shifts and the impacts are more apparent from both local and global perspectives. This presentation will discuss the interface of climate change\, sea level\, and humans through the lens of archaeology. Examples from Florida’s Gulf coast will highlight how climate change and sea level have impacted prehistoric coastal people in the past and how they shape our lives today.\n\nThis program is free and open to the public. There is limited in-person seating\, with masks and social distancing at the museum\, as well as a live stream and recording of the event. Sign up at www.cccourthouse.org or call 352-341-6428.

SUMMARY:Pursuit of Florida’s Paleo Hunters
DESCRIPTION:In this program Pursuit of Florida’s Paleo Hunters you can travel back into the last Ice Age and learn about Florida’s first people. Discover how they survived climate change and giant predators. Who were the archeologist that discovered these early hunters’ artifact sites? We will compare the artifacts found here in Florida to those found around North America. Were there people living here before the Clovis Tradition and what is the Solutrean Theory? What was their origin? These controversies will be examined\, and actual Paleoindian artifacts studied.\nOur 2021 Coffee and Conversations speaker series is funded by the Florida Humanities. The Florida Humanities is an amazing organization that support efforts throughout the state to bring artistic\, cultural\, and historical programming to local communities. Funding for Florida Humanities comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities and private donations.
