SUMMARY:Coffee and Conversations: Chucochatti\, Conflict at the Red Town\, 1836
DESCRIPTION:The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum presents Coffee and Conversations on Thursday\, April 7\, 2022. Free Events! Join the audience in person or online on YouTube at: tinyurl.com/courthousemuseum Please pre-register by phone at (352) 341-6428 or online at www.cccourthouse.org. Special thanks to our sponsor\, The Citrus County Chronicle!\n\n\nThursday\, April 7th at 7 pm: Sean Norman\n“Chucochatti\, Conflict at the Red Town\, 1836” Established in 1767\, Chucochatti was among the oldest Seminole villages located in Central Florida. Founded by Upper Creek migrants from Central Alabama\, Chucochatti was unique for being a Muskogee-speaking village in predominantly Miccosukee-speaking region. Weakened by raids in the decades before the 2nd Seminole War (1835-1842)\, the residents largely conceded to removal to the Arkansas Territory. Despite the village’s abandonment\, the Chucochatti area was a focal point of General Scott’s 1836 campaign and repeatedly reoccupied by Seminoles during the war. This presentation discusses the recent historical and archaeological investigations conducted by the Gulf Archaeology Research Institute to document evidence of the villages of Chucochatti and the U.S. military actions in the region.

SUMMARY:Movie on the Square: Follow that Dream
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the Square on Friday evening\, January 28th at 6:30 p.m. for a free outdoor screening of our favorite film\, Follow that Dream with Elvis Presley. As many locals will tell you\, Presley filmed the majority of the movie right here in Citrus County and surrounding parts of central Florida in 1961. Spoiler Alert! The final scenes of the movie take place in a courtroom–OUR courtroom to be exact. Shortly after Presley and his Hollywood movie crew left\, a growing Citrus County remodeled the interior of the courthouse. In the 1990s\, the people of Citrus County had a dream to restore the 1912 Courthouse to its original glory. This film helped restore this amazing piece of our local history and we want to share it with you! \nThis free outdoor screening will be held right outside the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum on the square. Be sure to bring a blanket\, a few lawn chairs\, and a friend and join us for an unforgettable evening of fun. \nA special thank you to the City of Inverness for sponsoring this event through their COVID Relief Event Program!

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: The Amazing History of Aprons
DESCRIPTION:Lunch and Learn brings Marnie Ward and Sue Collins from UF/IFAS Extension to talk on the traditions of aprons.  Sue is a 4-H Club leader and gifted seamstress; and Marnie is the Citrus County 4-H Agent. Both will share aprons from their personal collections and invite you to bring one of your own to share with the group. \nThe earliest aprons were worn with a purpose. They kept clothes clean and were a catchall for errands and tasks throughout the day. Worn by bakers\, cobblers\, blacksmiths\, butchers\, nurses\, waiters and waitresses they were practical\, and task focused. Worn by generations of working folks and woven into the fabric of the family they became something more. Come to learn the rich history of aprons and how we are passing it on to future generations in our community. Sign up for this free program HERE or call 352-341-6428.

SUMMARY:New Exhibit Opening: Tie One On...An Apron of Course!
DESCRIPTION:The apron has been taken for granted by many art and social historians. However\, this fascinating exhibit will reevaluate these unique objects as an important piece of our social history. \nFeaturing 50 vintage and contemporary examples\, this exhibit reviews the apron’s role as an emotionally charged vehicle for expression with a rich and varied craft history that is still relevant today. \nFeaturing aprons dating from the 1900s through present\, the exhibition chronicles changing attitudes toward women and domestic work. It also surveys the wide range of design and craft techniques apron-makers have used to express themselves\, while still working within creative venues traditionally available to women. Elaborately embroidered aprons of delicate cotton\, for example\, were worn by well-heeled women of the 1920s. In contrast\, the Depression and war years of the 1930s and 1940s inspired sturdy\, calico bib aprons. The post-war 1940s and 1950s—the June Cleaver era—stand out as the acknowledged heyday of the apron\, when commercial and intricately hand-decorated aprons flourished as symbols of family and motherhood. \nToday\, artists continue using aprons to explore cultural myths and realities\, as well as their individual experiences with American domesticity. Though not as widespread as they once were\, aprons remain as functional and protective garments for men and women alike.
