DESCRIPTION:The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum presents:\nCoffee and Conversations\, a Free Lecture\nThursday\, January 11th at 7 pm\n“Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Rachel Carson:\nTheir Books Changed the World”\nwith Betty Jean Steinshouer\n\nThis program begins in 1941\, when Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a journalist\, writing her River of Grass book for money\, not to save the Everglades. When Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962\, some of the United States’ most beloved birds were well on their way to extinction due to pesticides. This program tells how Douglas restored the Everglades and Carson saved wildlife through their writings.\nBetty Jean Steinshouer has presented programs in 43 states and Canada on a variety of authors and subjects. Her article on the “Dear Honey” letters by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was selected for the anthology Once Upon a Time in Florida to be published by University Press of Florida. Please be sure the toy is in good enough condition that another child would like it (If bringing multiple children\, please be sure to bring 3 per child). Place a pink tag on items a girl would enjoy\, a blue tag for a boy\, and a yellow tag if any child could enjoy the toy. Toys and games only\, please. And be sure to leave time during your visit to enjoy our “Toys through the Decades” exhibit\, all about the history of popular toys from the year 1900 on.

While we don’t offer paper tickets\, your name and number in your party will be added to a reservation list\, and you’ll be checked in at the door on the date of the show.\n⁠\nThe Currys are a family folk-rock outfit featuring brothers Jimmy and Tommy Curry and cousin Galen Curry. Active since 2013\, the band has performed in various lineups as a folk harmony trio and a five-piece folk-rock outfit. Their early work (“Follow” in 2014 and “West of Here” in 2016) features the voices of three distinct songwriters weaving harmony-driven Americana. The band’s third studio release\, “This Side of the Glass\,” meditates on personal and social relationships and explores the dual nature of performing artists as both the authors of stories and the objects of storytelling. The album features a grittier\, more mature sound that leans heavily on The Currys’ three-part vocal arrangements even while it strays beyond the borders of the folk & singer-songwriter tradition.\n\n\nCitrus County Historical Society Members receive a 20% discount on ticketed events. The Historic Haunt will feature an interactive element in which visitors can search for items through the haunt and return to our website to submit the answers. Correct answers will be entered to win a $100 VISA gift card. The Historic Haunt is suitable for ages 13 and up. It will contain fog\, strobe lighting effects\, disturbing scents\, and jump scares. You should not enter if you are pregnant\, are sensitive to strobe lights\, or have a heart condition. Ghostbusters R&D and America’s Angels will be providing a “Containment Area” around the Haunt. Please RSVP by calling our office between Tuesday and Saturday at (352) 341-6428.\n\nAt this event\, Mr. Donato will share his extensive knowledge on the origins and history of jazz while delighting the audience with his saxophone. Joe Donato is a saxophonist\, band leader\, composer\, and lyricist in the field of jazz and has been inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame. He has performed with some of the greats: Dizzy Gillespie\, Art Blakey\, Carmen McRae\, Nina Simone and Jack Jones. He has toured throughout the United States of America\, Canada\, Central and South America\, Europe\, and Asia. Mr. Donato has performed as a soloist with the Jerry Fischer Jazz Orchestra\, and has served as an adjunct professor at The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at The University of Miami.\nDonato was born in New Jersey\, studied saxophone and started touring with The Honeycombs when he was 15. He performed with other groups\, mainly in the South\, until 1968. Though reading music was not his forte\, Donato won a scholarship to study at Houston Baptist College. While he was honing his musical talents\, the Dean of The University of Miami School of Music heard Donato perform and offered him a scholarship to study. He’s been playing music out of South Florida since.

Rodney Kite-Powell is the Director of the Touchton Map Library at the Tampa Bay History Center. He received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts from the University of South Florida\, both in U.S. history. He wrote and lectured on state and local history and is the author of three books: History of Davis Islands: David P. Davis\, and the Story of a Landmark Tampa Neighborhood and Tampa Bay’s Waterfront: Its History and Development.\n\nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum.
