DESCRIPTION:Join Vince Morris\, Resources Administrator for the Withlacoochee State Forest for a presentation about the current management of the forest. This talk will include information about prescribed burning\, invasive species management\, the use of drones\, and endangered species management.\n\nVince was born and raised in Livermore\, California and attended Humboldt State University for a B.S. in Forest Resource Management in 1987. He worked for the Peace Corps in Guatemala\, and Nature Conservancy in Sacramento. He came to Florida in 1996 and worked at the Withlacoochee State Forestry Center as County Forester\, Ecology Forester\, Ecology Unit Leader\, and now Resource Administrator. Special passions are prescribed burning\, red-cockaded woodpecker management\, and invasive species control. He also volunteers at Russell Street Park in Brooksville and enjoys running and cycling.\n\nTo attend the event\, please RSVP in advance as seating is limited and seats may fill up. Away from the farm\, John worked as a carpenter & AJ taught various classes throughout the community. We sold the farm in 2022\, converted a bus to a RV in 3 1/2 months\, then hit the road to travel the US for 6 months. DESCRIPTION:The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum presents a Free Coffee and Conversations lecture by Magdalena Lamarre on Florida’s Underground Railroad on Thursday\, June 20\, 2024 at 7 pm in celebration of Juneteenth. Join us to listen and enjoy light refreshments. Please RSVP by calling the museum office between Tuesday and Saturday: (352) 341-6428. \nThe nation’s first Underground Railroad was established in Florida in the late 17th century\, servings as a beacon of freedom for runaway slaves from the American South. Existing before the better-known Northern Underground Railroad\, enslaved Africans gained their freedom by escaping and earning asylum in Spanish Florida. This presentation focuses on Florida’s early history as a Spanish territory\, the escape routes used by runaway slaves\, and the black communities they established before the abolition of slavery in the United States. \nMagdalena Lamarre was a Full Professor of History and Sociology at Miami-Dade College. Lamarre earned a BA in History and Secondary education from Hunter College\, an MA in History Education from Stony Brook university\, and completed post-graduate work in Sociology and Education at Florida International University. \nThis Florida Talks program is a partnership between Florida Humanities and The Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. Funding for this program was provided by Florida Humanities and sponsored in part by the State of Florida\, Department of State\, Division of Arts and Culture\, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Members of Citrus County Historical Society are invited to join us at the museum for a Members Only Mixer to celebrate a local history of recreation in Citrus County on Thursday\, May 23rd at 6 pm. Learn how photographs can establish an emotional connection between humans and animals to assist in conservation efforts. Nature enthusiasts\, photographers\, naturalists and anyone that is passionate about wildlife and nature will enjoy this program as Linda gives tips on ethical photography and how to capture beautiful images. Conservation Photography is storytelling in its purest form and Linda can’t wait to share some insights from her own experience on land and underneath the surface.\nLinda Wilinski is a conservation photographer with focus on freshwater springs. She is a certified Florida Master Naturalist\, attended Crealde’ School of Art and has won several prizes along with exhibiting her photography throughout Florida.\n\nWilinski uses her art to tell stories of Florida’s incredible wildlife and advocate for its protection. Living on the Rainbow River has enabled her to spend most of her free time kayaking\, snorkeling\,\nand educating others about the importance of Florida’s springs. Her vision is to reconnect people with the outdoors\, to bring awareness of Florida’s beauty as well as shedding light onto its hardships.\nThe purpose of her art is to encourage conservation.\n\nLinda has formed a special bond with some of the local wildlife and is also known as “the otter whisperer”.
